POLICE in the Turks and Caicos Islands yesterday dismissed rumours that head of beleaguered investment club Olint, David Smith, had attempted to commit suicide by taking a drug overdose.
“He is alive and kicking as far as I know,” Sergeant Calvin Chase of the Turks and Caicos police force told the Observer. “We have no such information and I am certainly not aware of it.”
Smith has been under the microscope since last week when Financial Investigation Unit police in the Turks and Caicos Islands raided his office there, seized computers and froze some of his assets.
“The Financial Investigation Unit is conducting intense investigations as it relates to Olint. There might be other entities overseas but the investigations are still at an early stage,” Chase said.
Smith lives on the main island of Providenciales, the most developed island which covers an area of 38 miles.
Yesterday, Chase said Smith was not arrested and was free to travel.
“He is not in custody and is free to come and go right now,” he told the Observer.

given the scale of OLINT and the FX experience of David Smith, there was little doubt in my mind since i heard of these schemes back in 2006, that there had to be questionable money launudering activity involved. this survived till now because the authorities are probably more interested in the ‘big kahuna’ or money behind the venture rather than the relatively small sums by intl standards that were invested in the fund by its members. the recent shuttering of OLINT would suggest that either the authorities were close to finding out more on the big fish, or the big fish was increasingly concerned by the widespread debate on OLINT drawing too much attention.
My only hope is DS remains alive and kicking throughout the remainder of this saga.
